IAM Canada – Local 2413 members at AAS Canada win at the bargaining table

Local 2413 members working at AAS Canada at Toronto Pearson International Airport secured significant victories at the bargaining table this week, marking a major milestone in their fight for better wages and benefits.

These dedicated workers are essential to the daily operations of the airport, handling the circulation of luggage carts used by passengers as they arrive at Toronto Pearson. Their hard work behind the scenes is crucial to ensuring smooth airport operations, and this contract represents a hard-earned win for their efforts.

The new contract was accepted with immense support as 94% of the members voted in favor.

Key provisions of the deal include the introduction of a wage scale that immediately increases wages by up to 13% based on seniority. The agreement also provides additional vacation weeks for workers with 15 and 20 years of service, a significant benefit for long-serving members.

General Chairperson Dan Janssen praised the bargaining committee’s hard work: “I have to give credit to the bargaining committee for their hard work and dedication throughout this process. They knew what the members wanted and held firm in order to achieve these gains.”

The IAM union represents thousands of airport workers, including hundreds of members across three departments at AAS Canada at Toronto Pearson. This contract victory serves as a reminder of the power of solidarity and the importance of strong representation at the bargaining table.

Les membres de la section locale 2413 travaillant chez AAS Canada à l’aéroport international Pearson de Toronto ont obtenu des victoires significatives à la table des négociations cette semaine, marquant une étape importante dans leur lutte pour de meilleurs salaires et avantages sociaux.

Ces travailleurs et travailleuses dévoués sont essentiels au bon fonctionnement quotidien de l’aéroport, et sont en charge de la circulation des chariots à bagages utilisés par les passagers à leur arrivée à Toronto Pearson. Leur travail est important pour garantir des opérations fluides à l’aéroport, et ce contrat représente une victoire bien méritée pour leurs efforts.

Le nouveau contrat a été accepté avec un immense soutien, 94 % des membres ayant voté en faveur.

Les principales dispositions de l’accord comprennent l’introduction d’une échelle salariale qui augmente immédiatement les salaires jusqu’à 13 % en fonction de l’ancienneté. L’accord offre également des semaines de congés supplémentaires pour les travailleurs et travailleuses ayant 15 et 20 ans de service, un avantage significatif pour les membres de longue date.

Le président général Dan Janssen a salué le travail acharné du comité de négociation : « Je tiens à rendre hommage au comité de négociation pour leur travail et leur dévouement tout au long de ce processus. Ils savaient ce que les membres voulaient et sont restés fermes pour obtenir ces gains.«

Le syndicat de l’IAM représente des milliers de travailleurs et travailleuses d’aéroport, y compris des centaines de membres répartis sur trois départements chez AAS Canada à Toronto Pearson. IAM Canada – IAM Sounds Alarm on Contract Flipping at Canada’s Largest Airport

IAM members working for TBH Services at Toronto Pearson airport are concerned for their future as their contract with the Greater Toronto Airport Authority has gone through a Request for Proposal (RFP) process. Some IAM members have worked for TBH Services at Canada’s largest workplace, Toronto Pearson Airport, for over 20 years.

The membership is very concerned with the lack of information and are on edge waiting to find out what will happen to their livelihoods should the contract change to a new employer. The RFP process was extended by one month and has left the membership on edge. They are very worried that it may change to a non-union employer that could drastically change work rules, wages and benefits.

The IAM has been pushing the airport authority to move away from the RFP process as this impacts workers rights and keeps wages low. The IAM also suggests poor working conditions and reduced wages due to contract flipping damages service levels as staff turnover becomes a major problem.

The IAM has been made aware that within the RFP documents there was no language about labour standards or Canadian Labour Code rights and protections for the existing employment group. This is despite the Toronto Airport Workers’ Council succeeding in 2016 to push the Greater Toronto Airport Authority to include labour standards and expectations within the RFP documents.

“Contract flipping is a destructive practice that needs to stop. The impact this is having on our membership is shameful. Workers at Toronto Pearson deserve better. Our members deserve better. The IAM will continue to lobby all levels of government and fight to eliminate this practice,” said Dan Janssen, General Chairperson for IAM District 140.

The IAM represents the greatest number of workers at Canadian airports.

IAMAW Canada – IAM Member nominated for award on Airport Workers Day at YYZ

It was a special day for IAM member Obo Hassan, as he was nominated and recognised for his achievements and contributions to the Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ) community. “Obo Hassan is our Health and Safety Co-chair for AAS Canada and is a leader in his workplace” said a proud Dan Janssen, IAM District Lodge 140 General Chairperson. “Obo is passionate about health and safety and making the lives of his co-workers better. This nomination is very well-deserved.”

Congratulations Obo and on behalf of the IAM. Thank you for all the work you do!

The awards were given as part of the Airport Workers Day celebrations that were put on at Toronto Pearson and airports across the country.

Airport Workers Day on June 26 this year is a national initiative led by the Canadian Airports Council (CAC) recognizing the people who are “moving what matters” and celebrating the vital contribution airport workers make to our communities and our economies.

The IAM represents the greatest number of workers at Canadian airports.

AIMTA Canada – Un membre de l’AIM a été honoré lors de la Journée des travailleurs de l’aéroport YYZ

Ce fut une journée spéciale pour Obo Hassan, membre de l’AIM, car il a été nommé et reconnu pour ses accomplissements et ses contributions à la communauté de l’aéroport Pearson de Toronto (YYZ). « Obo Hassan est notre coprésident de la santé et de la sécurité pour AAS Canada et est un leader dans son milieu de travail », a déclaré avec fierté Dan Janssen, président général du district 140 de l’IAM.  « Afin de garantir et améliorer la vie de ses collègues, Obo prend les responsabilités en matière de santé et de sécurité au sérieux. Cette nomination est bien méritée »”.

Les prix ont été remis dans le cadre des célébrations de la Journée des travailleurs des aéroports qui ont eu lieu à l’aéroport Pearson de Toronto et dans d’autres aéroports du pays.

La Journée des travailleurs des aéroports, qui a eu lieu le 26 juin de cette année, est une initiative nationale dirigée par le Conseil des aéroports du Canada (CAC) qui reconnaît les personnes qui « font avancer les choses » et qui célèbre la contribution vitale des travailleurs et des travailleuses des aéroports, pour nos communautés et à nos économies.

L’AIM représente le plus grand nombre de travailleurs dans les aéroports canadiens.
