Achat d’Air Transat par Air Canada annulé

2 avril 2021 – Toronto (Ontario) – L’annonce faite aujourd’hui par Air Canada concernant l’annulation de l’acquisition d’Air Transat est inattendue. D’après ce que nous avons compris, l’offre de la compagnie n’a pas été approuvée par la Commission européenne, ce qui indique clairement que l’acquisition n’ira pas de l’avant. Le vice-président général de l’AIM Canada, Stan Pickthall, a déclaré : « Nous ne nous attendions certainement pas à ce genre d’annonce pour le début d’une longue fin de semaine des Fêtes! »

L’AIM a surveillé de près les développements de la situation, car toute décision a une conséquence sur les membres qui travaillent dans les deux compagnies aériennes. Nous continuerons de surveiller la situation et nous travaillerons en étroite collaboration avec les représentants et les sections locales concernés pour voir comment les choses se déroulent », a déclaré  Pickthall. « Il est encourageant de constater que le ministre des Transports, Omar Alghabra, accorde la priorité à la protection des emplois au Québec et au Canada, notamment à la viabilité d’Air Transat et du secteur canadien du transport aérien. La protection des emplois est de la plus haute importance pour l’AIM, et nous demandons encore une fois au gouvernement fédéral d’agir rapidement et de fournir de l’aide à cette industrie, et d’être cohérent avec ses objectifs. »

Vice-président général Pickthall a ajouté : « L’AIM a exercé des pressions constantes auprès du gouvernement fédéral pour obtenir du soutien pour l’industrie de l’aviation au cours de la dernière année, et nous attendons toujours que quelque chose soit présenté. Quelle que soit la forme que cela prendra, nous continuerons d’insister pour que tout soutien profite aux travailleurs de l’industrie et à toutes les compagnies aériennes, y compris les employés d’Air Canada et d’Air Transat. »

Fred Hospes, président général directeur du district 140 de l’AIM, est d’accord : « J’ai eu des discussions préliminaires avec nos présidents généraux partout au pays, et nous en discuterons davantage au cours de la fin de semaine. L’AIM est absolument déterminée à poursuivre son travail et à représenter ses membres dans les deux compagnies aériennes au cours des prochaines semaines. »

L’Association internationale des machinistes et de l’aérospatiale est le plus grand syndicat du Canada qui représente l’aviation, les compagnies aériennes, les aéroports et les travailleurs de l’aérospatiale. Le syndicat représente plus de 20 000 membres dans le transport aérien partout au Canada.

Air Canada purchase of Air Transat cancelled

Toronto, ON – Today’s announcement from Air Canada regarding the cancelation of the acquisition of Air Transat comes unexpectedly. From our understanding, the Company’s offer was not approved by the European Commission, making it clear that the acquisition will not go forward. IAM Canadian General Vice-President Stan Pickthall stated, “We certainly weren’t expecting this type of announcement as a start to a holiday long weekend!”

The IAM has kept a close watch on developments as any decision impacts members who work in both airlines. We will continue monitoring the situation, and will work closely with the Representatives and Locals involved to see how things proceed,” commented Pickthall. “It is encouraging that the Minister of Transport, Omar Alghabra, is placing a priority on protecting jobs in Quebec and Canada, including ensuring the viability of Air Transat and the Canadian airline sector. Protecting jobs is of the utmost importance to the IAM, and we call on the federal government once again to act quickly and provide aid to this industry, and be consistent with their goals.”

GVP Pickthall added that, “The IAM has been continuously lobbying the federal government for support for the aviation industry over the past year, and we are still waiting for something to be presented. Whatever form that takes, we will continue to insist that any support must benefit the workers across the industry and all airlines, including both Air Canada and Air Transat employees.”

Fred Hospes, President and Directing General Chairperson (PDGC) of IAM District 140 concurred, “I’ve had preliminary discussions with our General Chairpersons across the country, and we will be discussing this further over the weekend. The IAM is absolutely committed to continuing our work and representing our members at both airlines during the coming weeks.”

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW) is Canada’s largest union representing aviation, airlines, airports and aerospace workers. The union represents over 20,000 members in the air transportation sector across Canada.
