I am writing to express my Union's grave concerns about the future of the aircraft heavy maintenance sector in this country, its workers and their communities across Canada.

 

 


Once again this event was a great success.

Many of our members demonstrated their generosity by giving blood, giving life!

It was a first experience for some of them but others are regular donors such as Liane Hébert, Administrative Assistant at District 11, who was giving blood for the 50th time!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our volunteers for their valuable help throughout that day!

For the 5th consecutive year, the Machinists' Union will hold its annual blood donor clinic on Thursday, March 18, from 10:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Central Court of Place Vertu on 3131 Côte Vertu boulevard, St. Laurent. This year's objective is to have 150 donors.


Toronto, ON – The recent announcement by Air Canada/AVEOS of the layoff of more than one thousand aircraft maintenance mechanics is the latest indication that Canada is in danger of losing its place in this growing global industry.


On December 18, 2009, Canada and the European Union (EU) signed an “Open Skies” air transport Agreement, which provides a framework for progressively deregulating air travel between Canada and Europe.


Toronto, ON – “Over one thousand highly skilled aircraft mechanics at Air Canada will be laid off this April and the company doesn’t give a damn,” says a disgusted Fred Hospes, IAMAW District 140 Regional Assistant Directing General Chairperson –Western Region.

As you may have read in both French and English newspapers from Montreal, Quebec City and Sherbrooke, analysts at the Montreal Economic Institute claim, on democratic grounds, that compulsory votes must be held on certification applications (requests to unionize) to confirm the intention of the concerned workers.

Ottawa, ON – Following the lead of their co-workers in Hamilton, Swissport employees at Ottawa McDonald Cartier International Airport have joined the IAMAW.


Montréal, QC – Twenty employees of Gestion-Air have turned to the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers for workplace representation.


Hamilton, ON.  A lack of employer respect and continual staff shortages at Hamilton International Airport were the key factors for Swissport employees joining the IAMAW.

IAMAW members and Canada’s aerospace industry

 More than 45,000 Canadians, including 15,000 members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW), were employed in the original Avro CF-105 Arrow jet interceptor program when it was cancelled in 1959.

 


Toronto, On – Under pressure from the IAM and other unions, Labour Minister Jean Pierre Blackburn has denied Air Canada’s request for a waiver under the Canada Labour Code.


Montréal, QC – Members of IAMAW Local Lodge 2309 employed by Swissport have ratified their first collective agreement.


Edmonton, AB – This week’s decision by the Supreme Court of Canada in the Finning decision confirms that trade union bargaining rights are protected when a company creates and finances a new company, transfers part of its operation to that new company, and lays off the unionized workers.
